In the Great Exodus, most of the refugees of the Cal-Thaoun Dynasty (350 - 1016) settled along the southern coasts of Hells Womb. The settlement of Zayr, named after a shield guardian construct that fought alongside Arcana in the Demon Spawn War (89 GE - 269 GE) was built near the meeting of the Hag River and the Sparkling Bay.
Over the next two centuries, with a deep sea harbor, and a bay rich in fish, Zayr served as the capital of the Kal-Oni Empire (1016 - 1266).
In the Kal-Oni War (1260 - 1266), Zayr was blockaded by the Merchant League. For six years, the harbor cut-off, engaged by dark forces from within, and fighting breakaway states like Paradomea, the city's population suffered terribly, with many fleeing for the winning side.
Abandoned as part of the peace treaty that ended the reign of the Kal-Oni, Zayr became a haven for pirates, beasts, monsters, and undead.
Zayr's strongest defense was the Pyramid of Merioss. It incinerated pirate raiders out of the Buccaneer Archipelago, boiled the insides of sahuagin marauders out of RĂ¢ngilan, and several times turned its burning rays on Zayr's own people.
In 1270, a Kal-Oni fortress-palace was rebuilt by a Hades sect named the Dead Guard. Named Gravestone Gates, from this fortress the Dead Guard patrolled a city-sized ruin, keeping the dead in their resting places, destroying undead, and rooting out sources of evil.
Captured in the Grim Harvest Crusade (1462 - 1464), Zayr became the marshaling area for a growing undead army under the command of the Dead Council, leaders of the Black Tide of Thasmudyan.
In the Siege of the Eastern Capital (1553 - 1554), Zayr fell to the Foronir Alliance. Spoiled from a century of evil and undead factories, unhallow ground, Zayr was left a ruin.
