In 1270, a ruined fortress-palace from the time of recently fallen Kal-Oni Empire (1016 - 1266) was rebuilt by a sect of Hades worshipers named the Dead Guard. A fort became a fortified church securing a network of old underground crypts, the resting place of Kal-Oni's wealthy. A spiritual area, where communing with the dead was the norm, it became an area of great importance for generating wealth and proselytizing. Said to be one of the evil conduits that brought down the Kal-Oni Empire, the Dead Guard built another tomb around the entire area. Renamed Gravestone Gates, at the heart of the city-sized ruin of Zayr, it was place of Hades worship, barracks of the the Dead Guard, and a place of revenue for those seeking to look upon, but not commune, with their ancestors.

By 1400, Gravestone Gates was a major church of Hades. Built with Styx Granite, giving it a gloomy other-worldly appearance, it kept sealed Zayr's four century old mausoleums and graveyards home to nearly ten thousand.

In the Grim Harvest Crusade (1462 - 1464), Gravestone Gates fell to a goblin army under the leadership of Black Banner. Under new management, soon to become the Black Tide of Thasmudyan, Gravestone Gates became an undead-making factory, building dozens of skeletons, zombies, and mummies every day.
