Most salamanders home to Bal-Kriav are descendants of those marooned here after coming through unstable rifts. These rifts are temporary gateways between this world and Chaos; they last until a weave spider finds and mends the surrounding Web. Most of these short-lived rifts are links between places on Muspelheim and Bal-Kriav's greatest lava river, the Surturs Artery. This river of lava flows deep in the bowels of Bal-Kriav. It has numerous arteries that course to the surface where they form volcanoes, great lava rivers, and desolate super-heated wastelands.

Nearly 10,000 salamanders came to Bal-Kriav through Ingu'lumin's First Rift and Ingu'lumin's Second Rift. They were tasked with boring out Gunul-Birum.

Over the ages, the salamanders of Bal-Kriav have collected in areas, building their own empires and serving in others. Most salamanders on Bal-Kriav have lost their Outsider trait. The same occurs for any of those born on a world of the Mortal Systems.
