Most salamanders home to Bal-Kriav are descendants of those marooned here after coming through unstable rifts. These rifts, sometimes appearing erupting volcanoes, are temporary gateways between this world and the faraway world of Muspelheim an other fiery worlds. The largest group to come across in the span of only one year, was the 10,000 that used Ingu'lumin's First Rift (9101 GE) and Ingu'lumin's Second Rift. Once on the other side of these rifts, they were tasked with boring out Gunul-Birum.

Over the ages, the salamanders of Bal-Kriav have collected in areas, building their own empires and serving in others.
