Zathess, sited in the eastern part of Tha'lith was created in the Varelay Upheaval (2608 LE - 16 HE). Its violent eruptions burned away the jungle, creating what became known as the wastes of Caralda. The eruptions of Zathess, secretly powered by a rift, also carried Firenewt settlers. These were peaceful followers of Kossuth, settlers they claim, taking the great lava flood to new homes.

Natives of a faraway system, of the thousands that made the journey, only several hundred survived being taken along a lava river and then into the bowels of a volcano; today there is a near-perfect system for trapping those coming through the rift that still feeds Zathess. The first to come found themselves tossed into the wastes of Caralda, marooned on the world of Bal-Kriav. The Firenewt settlers, their descendants devoted followers and proselytizers of Kossuth, began constructing the settlement of Illadvard in 14 HE, and five years later, mining the great adamantine veins of Zathess.
