The githyanki and githzerai were some of the earliest civilization of this world. Their population rapidly increased from the Lith-Crillion Era and into the Horgon Era. The githyanki and githzerai fought incessantly with each other. After their last great war, lasting almost 100 years, they were in such a weakened state that they fell prey to an illithid empire from Ghífthauk's moon Ráglauth. This conflict, the First Suellk Invasion (135 HE - 150 HE) led to fourteen centuries of githyanki and githzerai servitude to the Suellk Empire.
Much of this planet was ravaged in the Incarsabec Rebellion (1531 HE - 1544 HE). In this slave rebellion, the githyanki and githzerai poisoned the landscape and reduced most of the settlements to ruins. Suellk was a broken empire for a long time afterwards, struggling to survive on a planet plagued with psychic storms. In less than a decade, an illithid population of several hundred thousand was reduced to tens of thousands by a psychic virus that ate away the host's brain (c.f. Igtats Thoughts).
Today, Ghífthauk is a world with very few intelligent lifeforms. Only those that managed to hide and wait until the psychic viruses burned themselves out and that can find a way to survive the psychic storms that still ravage the surface. The Dromites are one race that survived the psychic storm. There hive mind physiology is credited with saving them from the psychic burn.
