Stormgur is one of the oldest mercenary companies of the realm. They were formed during the Domination Wars (995 - 1016). In the Siege of Ing-Serold, a group of adventurers and soldiers volunteered to stay back and cover the retreat of the populace. These volunteers were thought to have perished when the Khazarkar Empire sacked the city. Later it was learned that they fought the khazarkars for another six hours before retreating in good order into the sewers. A month later, the soldiers and adventurers formed a mercenary company called Stormgur; some called them the Storm Guard. Initially, they worked for free until their combat prowess became well-known and desired. In less than a year, they had fought in over a dozen major engagements. Legend of the group spread with people spreading tales of their battle skills, arcane arts, psionic capabilities, and abundance of healers.
The skill of the group was not enough to save the Tragarans from being forced out of Gulimbor. It would have taken a hundred of such units to have made a difference against the Khazarkar war machine. The heroics of the group carried on after the Great Exodus (998 - 1017). In Hells Womb, they were employed by the Kal-Oneans for nearly fifty winters. The unit then went far west, and came to serve the Farinteens for almost two decades. They then went north and served under various satraps in the Northern Hordelands.
In the Black Tide War (1465 - 1504), they served under the Black Tide. When the contract ended, they were immediately hired by the other side. This happened during the Athenian Crusade (1539 - 1551) and while they were still in the now enemy lines of the Black Tide. The Stormgur wiped out an undead army nearly three times their size before breaking out and heading the lines of their new employers.
Stormgur has been around for a very long time. They have fortresses spread across many regions. These bastions act as recruitment and training areas and serve as storage depots. The camaraderie, valor, notoriety, and wealth of Stormgur is such that many who join end up becoming a Stormgur for life.
The Covenant of Stormgur is the book on the founding principles and code of the group. This has changed little since it was first written in the 999. One of the principles is that the group will not indulge in acts that will hurt future contracts. For example, they may serve a dark master, but as a whole they would not follow a genocidal order by their employer.
