There are two types of flying ships, skyships and voidships. Both have been around in some form or another since the Creation War(1486 DE - 8777 DE). They were rare even then, remaining that way for thousands of years. The technology to make these floating vessels, along with their engines, began more common after the flight trials of Balforn in 1176.
Skyships are powered by the wind, the wind and an engine, or just an engine. In most cases, a skyship cannot float.
