The Rift Spanner is a spear-like magical device used to open breaches in the Web of Magic. These are short-term in duration, lasting only a few minutes at best. They are used to make "jumps" across the Void. By design, they are restricted to a particular system with their power burning out if an attempt is made to open an inter-system rift. The Lith-Crillion invented these devices to help in researching and cataloging worlds.
