In the last days of the Black Tide War (1465 - 1504), the Farinteen Alliance was broken. Her defeated armies retreated east into the Slafknara Forest and surrounding highlands. The remnants of the Farinteen Empire became known as the Slafknara Rangers. They continued to fight the Black Tide in guerrilla fashion. In 1506, they formed an alliance with the Voldanwen, a wood elf expeditionary force that escaped the fate of their nation, the Galadriël Kingdom, with her people trapped inside Viressur. The goal of both was to restore Galadriël, destroy the Black Tide, and bring unity to the peoples they protected.

Generally, the wood elves of the Sylvan Kingdoms did not like Fartineen's Tragarans. When Katrana destroyed Lake Nellaegaer, they decided that it was time to join forces, organize their efforts, and bring an end to the madness of the Black Tide.

In 1531, the Shields captured the Targad city Iglutt. This ancient place became the heart of operations for those intent on freeing the Lands of Purity from the Black Tide.

In 1533,the Shields captured the Targad city Milithian.

In 1539, the Shields of Iraktharbhun joined the Holy Quinary, making war on the Black Tide's undead legions. After the Athenian Crusade (1539 - 1551), the Voldanwen returned home to Galadriël. The Slafknara Rangers, mostly Tragarans, went on to become the nucleus of Malacost's military.
