At the northern tip of Shadow Rift is an area called The Deafening. In the age of the Glangveif Monarchy (314 HE - 31), it was the empire's only source for salt. In the last years of Glangveif, the salt mines were abandoned. Orcs and other slaves were left behind. They took over operations, trading salt as their primary income. They split up into warring factions that lasted until the arrival of the Ink-Shad.
The area is called The Deafening for its great sound. Surrounded by innumerable echo stones, a great waterfall plunges 2,200 feet, creating a noise level so high that it causes deafness. Those that mine here use heavy ear protection to avoid permanent hearing loss.
