Chaotum is sited on the island of Kirthak. It has a large mercantile fleet which trades with the peoples bordering the Galathien sea. The city has always be in a chaotic place. Seers claim that the Durkoth ruins over which the city was built are the cause of this entropic infiltration. Long after they were gone, builders decided to make some of the city's structures like the otherworldly styles of the Horgon Empire (159 HE - 537 HE). Beneath the city are numerous labyrinths, many water-filled, that were originally built by the Durkoth and have been expanded upon by later residents.
Around the Year 50, Theegans settled in the area. They rebuilt parts of the old city, using it as a base for pirate raids. As time passed, other peoples came to the city and have added their cultural influence to the city and its buildings.
Chaotum has resisted occupation by every power that has come to the Lands of Purity. The Farinteen Empire tried make the city a vassal, yet failed after a series of bitter insurrections. In the Black Tide War (1465 - 1504), the city remained neutral, repelling two Black Tide attacks. Although the government remained neutral, merchants carried about their business of supplying both sides in the war.
Chaotum is peopled by Tragarans, Theegans, Gnolls, Githzerai and peoples. Most of the city's people lean towards chaos.
