Avandra and Arcana created this rift with the goal of forcing Demogorgon's army out of Sondicar. Then a highly defensible valley, the rift would eventually turn it into a lake; the idea of using rifts to flood an area was nothing new, the same had been done at Lake Radullu with great success.
