Zathess is a volcano in the eastern part of Tha'lith and is part of a collection of volcanoes called the Hen'khas.
In the Varelay Upheaval (2608 LE - 16 HE), the Hen'khas volcanoes became much more active than normal. Since that time Zathess has remained active, yet not nearly as violent and cataclysmic as it was for the four centuries of the Varelay Upheaval. The activity of the volcano burned away the jungle around it, cratered and split the land, sinking it some, resulting in what came to be called the Caralda wasteland.
When Hellbleaker led Goth-Dyvermoir, he had them build tunnels up to the surface from Surturs Eyebrow. The dragon emperor then annexed the area around the volcano and forcibly moved settlers into this area. These settlers were mostly firenewts and none to happy about being forced to live so far away from their homeland. This unhappiness would eventually lead to a rebellion in what came to be called the Caralda Affair.
Much of the gem resources of Zathess are spent, mined out long ago by Varelay slaves. Sometimes, a lucky prospector comes cross rich veins of amethyst, sapphire and silver. These finds are often the cause of much fighting.
