Like the volcano Typhalumus, Surtur created Vaermund to deter demon usage of the Agulbandal depression. Unlike its opposite, it has remained hot and active since its creation.
Vaermund was the home of petty tyrants for thousands of years. In the Horgon Era, more sensible leaders gained power. They gave up raiding and warmongering for commercial interests. Known as the Soot Lords, they have holds stretching from the upper reaches of the volcano down to where it joins with a great lava river, a canal of Surturs Artery called Annbilds Entrail.
