The term Archdevil came into usage after the Trial of Asmodeus. It is a title, a state of power gained by certain devils.
Archdevils get their power by promotion. Asmodeus, the System Overlord of the Nine Hells, is the only one with this power to make one a super powerful devil, an archdevil.
