Unvarith was built by the kuo-toans of the Âkhi empire. It served as their northernmost outpost. When Gholompotl was abandoned, the kuo-toans of that city-state came to Unvarith and captured the place from their Âkhi enemies (c.f. Year 925). As a result of the wars to re-take the place, Unvarith grew to be a mighty citadel.
Unvarith exists on the surface and in the Underdark. The surface of the city begins near the bottom of Izen'nâth, overlooking the murky waters of lake Trândargal. It continues south like a wedge into the underground. The deeper one goes to the water level of the lake, they will enter a humid and wet Underdark city crowded with grottoes, fungi gardens, mushroom forests, and lichen. This area is the abode of the city's kuo-toa and slaves. The surface part of the city has its own governor which answers to the subsurface one. The upper half of Unvarith is the abode of those more accustomed to surface conditions. The population includes mostly goblins and mongrelfolk. The surface part of the city was built by Gholompotl's kuo-toans as a place to meet foreign emissaries and to trade with the surface. It grew in size afterwards by some of those who worked to build the place, with them sticking around in make-shift camps that were gradually turned into buildings.
